I have received this mail and I want you all to read and support the fishermen of Tamil Nadu. Thanks.

The Civil War in Srilanka has disturbed many innocent lives. The disaster still continues. Nearly 80,000 people were killed as far as the official declaration is concerned. Many Srilankan citizens were forced to migrate to various countries, especially to India. They left behind their belongings, most importantly their Motherland.

60 % of the migrants are children aged below 14. These children were placed in various refugee camps in Tamil Nadu and Orissa. Here, I am not analyzing the pros and cons of the war. On the contrary, I wish to bring to your attention about the School in Bangalore.

Indira Gandhi International Academy (IGIA) was started by the former Prime Minister Mr.Rajiv Gandhi for Srilankan refugee’s children way back in 1990. It was aimed to provide food, education and other rehabilitaion measures. The Bright Society was formed to equip this younger generation with the education and values to create a new, healthy and strong democratic society in their homeland when they return.

The Indira Gandhi International Academy (IGIA) is the Bright Society’s pioneer project for the education and rehabilitation of the Sri Lankan children. The Bright Society is a non-profit, non-political, charitable service organization registered under the Societies Registration Act #27 of 1975. Bright Society is also approved under Section 80G of the IT Act (tax exemption for donations).

IGIA started with 450 children who came from various refugee camps in Tamil Nadu and Orissa. The Bright Society has managed to run the IGIA by receiving donations and loans from philanthropic individuals.  Currently the number of children has been scaled down to about 230 children due to a lack of funds.  IGIA has classes I to X on the premises and 19 students staying on our premises and going to be the local colleges for their PUC and degree education. Education based on Karanataka State Board syllabus.

More students are anticipated to join on June 2009. ISKON moment’s Akshayapatra scheme provides lunches from Monday through Friday. They are struggling to provide food on weekends. They occassionally provide breakfast and dinner due to lack of funds. The school has a computer room with 20 working computers and a library with over 300 books – both provided through the generosity of AOL & Cisco.

Myself and my friend went there and understood that more help to offer from all of us. We met Ms. Chitra Rajashekar who is in charge of administration. She welcomed us and provided necessary information. She deserves a special mention here.

After Mr.Rajiv Gandhi’s assasination, no Government is supporting. IGIA ‘s  children are expecting assistance from people. I sincerely believe that it is of vital importance that we must provide necessary assistance at the earliest. We must assist right from food to infrastructure. I request people to help and help constantly. Monthly 100 Rs can be given.  100 is a bare minimum one can afford to help. Help as much as you can.

Address:

Indira Gandhi International Academy,
#10/2, Yelahanka Jakkur Road, Jakkur,
Bangalore – 560 064.

Who are willing to send DD or Cheque, send it in favour of Indira Gandhi International Academy, payable at Bangalore. Contact Ms. Chitra Rajashekar to understand their requirements. chitraj@gmail.com

I owe to my friend a lot. Because of him only I came to know about this school. We are determined to assist in every possible manner. I take this opportunity to thank our friends who already started helping.

The Grand Anicut, also known as the Kallanai, is an ancient dam built on the Kaveri River in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Kallanai Built By Karikalan, A Chola King.

It was built by the Chola king Karikalan around the 2nd Century BC[1] and is considered one of the oldest water-diversion or water-regulator structures in the world, still in use.[2][3] The Kaveri River forms the boundary between the Erode and Salem districts. The Bhavani River joins the Kaveri at the town of Bhavani, where the Sangameswarar Temple, an important pilgrimage spot in southern India, was built at the confluence of the two rivers. Sweeping past the historic rock of Tiruchirapalli, it breaks into two channels at the island of Srirangam, which enclose between them the delta of Thanjavur (Tanjore), the garden of South India.

The northern channel is called the Kollidam (Kolidam); the other preserves the name of Kaveri, and empties into the Bay of Bengal at Poompuhar, a few hundred miles south of Chennai (Madras). On the seaward face of its delta are the seaports of Nagapattinam and Karaikal. Irrigation works have been constructed in the delta for over 2,000 years.

The Kallanai is a massive dam of unhewn stone, 329 metres (1,080 ft) long and 20 metres (60 ft) wide, across the main stream of the Kaveri. The purpose of the dam was to divert the waters of the Kaveri across the fertile Delta region for irrigation via canals. The dam is still in excellent repair, and supplied a model to later engineers, including the Sir Arthur Cotton’s 19th-century dam across the Kollidam, the major tributary of the Kaveri.

The area irrigated by the ancient irrigation network of which the dam was the centrepiece was 69,000 acres (280 square kilometres). By the early 20th century the irrigated area had been increased to about 1,000,000 acres (4,000 square kilometres).
